It's been a while, and I've been meaning to post these, so I finally decided to bite the bullet and do it. I went up to Maine the third week of August for vacation to see the family, and to bring Katie up to the homeland :) Peaks Island, ME.
I took a ton of pictures, these are just a sampling. Just a sampling, and yet there's still a hell of a lot of them.
Here we are with Portland in the background:
Katie standing in front of the 5 story tower. They cemented up the entrance, so we used to climb in that lower window, take the stairs up a flight, then the only way to get to the top was to climb a rope where the spiral staircase used to be. You can't even see the top in this picture. The island is full of old WWII forts like these.
Katie sitting on a rock back shore. The majority of the shoreline is rock.
Me on the same rock, looking quite regal if I say so myself
This is Battery Steele, it housed two 18" guns. They were only fired twice, once with a 1/4 charge for the 2000lb round, and once with a 1/2 charge. The 1/2 charge test fire broke every window on the island. They never had to fire it again.
Katie in front of Battery Steele, you can see the name a little there
I told her how cold the water is up there, she didn't believe me
Sup
Mom and Katie in front of the 5th Maine. It was a civil war regiment.
Katie and mom on the ferry ride back to Portland.
My brother Sephie, with one of cousin Jason's dogs, either Abby or Murdoch, both Scotties.
Katies first Maine lobster bake
Sephie and his girlfriend Anna.
Me and Katie backshore back on the island again. If you notice, most of the pictures of the two of us are from the same angle because I'm taking it myself. I'm pretty good at the 'no look'
Katie driving Nana's golf cart. Apparently it's a great honor to be able to take the cart, but I had a cute little blonde with me who helped the odds ;)
We went to go see Portland Head Light. A very famous lighthouse that is still in service today. It was commissioned by George Washington
The grass was very green
It had a big light. This is the second largest size lens they make for lighthouses
That's the ship they shot the movie Amistad on
There used to be an Army base surrounding the lighthouse, they had 12" gun emplacements everywhere, this was one. Between that and the other forts around Casco bay anyone trying to invade Portland was in big trouble.
A mansion right by the lighthouse
That mansion, it burnt down.
Again
More WWII observation posts by the lighthouse, also had 5" guns.
Shopping in Portland
We took a duck boat tour. It's one of those old WWII amphibious vehicles.
Old observation tower to see what ships were coming into the harbor.
Fort Georges. It was actually built around the civil war times I think, but never used
This came off one of the ships that accepted the Japanese surrender for WWII
More fort
Remember what I said about the duck boat? Being amphibious? We're in the water
And we're still floating
That's the ferry we take from Portland to the Island.
The Henry Longfellow's house
A statue of Longfellow. It's said he grew the beard because his face was badly burned in a home fire and he wanted to hide the scars
The awesome shirt I bought
Sephie in his stupid hat, drinking a beer at Rosies.
I particularly like the "FLED NY" plate
This was taken at a German style beer garden in Portland, it was pretty sweet
I happened to catch the duck boat while it was taking other people on a tour. That's it.
I just had to take a picture of the amount of meat in this sandwich
Katie didn't understand why I needed a reference for the size of the meat, hence the look on her face.
The fam had a cookout backshore
Sephie throwing rocks. It's what we do on a shore filled with rocks
Cousin Jason and Brother Sephie
Me and Katie again
Dad and Lynx
That should be more than enough for now.
